The India data center market is undergoing a massive structural transformation. Driven by the explosive compute demands of Generative AI, enterprise cloud adoption, and strict data localization mandates, the sector's valuation is projected to more than double—jumping from $10 billion in 2025 to $22 billion by 2030.

 


 

Total capacity is expected to surge from 1.5 gigawatts (GW) to over 5 GW. This hyper-growth is no longer just about standard cloud storage; it is a high-stakes infrastructure race to build the backbone of India's digital economy. Global hyperscalers and domestic conglomerates are committing tens of billions of dollars to dominate this space.

A key pillar of Google's strategy is a massive 1 GW AI data center campus currently under development in Visakhapatnam. To navigate complex land and green energy requirements, Google is actively co-investing with domestic infrastructure leaders.

  • Microsoft Azure: To maintain its enterprise edge, Microsoft is investing up to $20.5 billion by 2030. This capital is focused on land acquisition and specialized facilities designed to train and deploy Large Language Models (LLMs) locally for Indian businesses.

The Domestic Giants: Adani and Reliance

While foreign hyperscalers provide the global computing ecosystem, India's conglomerates control the critical localized assets: land, regulatory navigation, and the vast power generation required for gigawatt-scale operations.

  • Adani Group's Green Compute Strategy: Adani has pivoted aggressively toward sustainable, AI-optimized infrastructure. The group announced a $100 billion investment plan over the next decade to build 5 GW of renewable-powered data centers. Through its joint venture, AdaniConneX, and strategic plays—like co-investing up to $5 billion in Google's Visakhapatnam campus—Adani aims to control both the server infrastructure and the renewable energy grid powering it.

  • Reliance Industries’ Hyperscale Push: Reliance is aggressively expanding through proprietary facilities and strategic joint ventures. Reliance Jio is developing a massive 7.5 million-square-foot facility in Uttar Pradesh. Simultaneously, through "Digital Connexion"—a joint venture with Brookfield Infrastructure and Digital Realty—Reliance is building hyperscale campuses in core connectivity hubs like Mumbai and Chennai.

  1. Generative AI Compute Demands: AI workloads require 10x to 100x the computing power and advanced liquid cooling compared to traditional server setups. This necessitates fundamentally new, high-density architectures.

  2. Data Sovereignty and Localization: Indian regulatory frameworks increasingly mandate that sensitive financial, telecom, and citizen data remain on domestic servers. Foreign hyperscalers must host data locally to service enterprise and government clients.

  3. Global Cost Arbitrage: Building data centers in India costs roughly $6 million to $7 million per megawatt. This is significantly more cost-effective than established Asian hubs like Singapore, making India a highly lucrative deployment zone.

  4. Renewable Energy Integration: AI data centers are immensely power-hungry. The strategic alignment of global tech giants seeking carbon neutrality with Indian conglomerates managing massive solar and wind portfolios has created a perfectly symbiotic growth environment.
